Why Upgrade to Modern LED Lighting?

Modern LED lighting offers several advantages over older incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lighting.

1. Panel insulation

LED lighting can use dramatically less electricity than traditional incandescent lighting. The U.S. Department of Energy says LED products can use up to about 90% less energy than incandescent lighting. For homes with many recessed lights or businesses where lights run long hours, those savings add up fast.

2. Longer Life

Quality LED products can commonly provide tens of thousands of operating hours, meaning fewer bulb replacements and less maintenance. The DOE notes quality white LEDs can have useful lives of roughly 30,000 to 50,000 hours or more.

3. Choose the Color of the Light

Older lighting meant accepting whatever color the bulb produced. Modern LEDs come in different color temperatures, and many fixtures let you select it during installation.

4. Dimmable Lighting

Many modern LED fixtures pair with compatible dimmers, letting you adjust brightness for different situations bright for cooking or working, low for a cozy living room or bedroom. DOE also notes that most modern LED products are available with dimming capability.

5. Better Direction of Light

Traditional bulbs send light in every direction. Modern LED fixtures can direct light exactly where it's needed.

Types of Indoor LED Lighting

There are several ways to upgrade existing lighting

LED Recessed Lighting

Modern recessed LEDs provide a clean appearance and come in multiple sizes, color temperatures and brightness levels. Many newer fixtures are very thin and skip the bulky housing older can lights needed.

Retrofit Options

Three Ways to Convert Existing Lighting to LED

There isn’t one correct way to upgrade every building. Depending on the existing fixtures, condition and budget, there are three common approaches.

Option 1

Complete LED Fixture Replacement

The existing fixture is removed and replaced with a modern fixture designed specifically for LED lighting. For many permanent lighting upgrades, this is the option we prefer when the budget allows.

Advantages

Disadvantages

OPTION 2

LED Retrofit

A retrofit keeps some or all of the existing fixture but replaces the older light source and electrical components with LED equipment — especially useful in commercial buildings with large quantities of existing fluorescent or HID fixtures.

OPTION 3

Install LED Replacement Bulbs

The simplest option is to keep the existing fixture and replace the traditional bulb with an LED bulb. For ordinary residential lamps and fixtures, this can be perfectly reasonable. For larger commercial or exterior fixtures, products commonly called LED corn bulbs are sometimes used to replace older HID lamps.

What Is a Corn Bulb?

A corn bulb is an LED lamp covered with rows of small LEDs. The arrangement lets the lamp produce a large amount of light while fitting into many existing screw-in lamp sockets.

Often used as a retrofit for

Metal-halide fixtures

High-pressure sodium

Warehouse lights

Parking-lot fixtures

Some wall packs

Advantages

Why We Don't Always Recommend Them

Corn bulbs are often the least expensive conversion, but they aren’t always the best long-term solution.

Heat Dissipation

LEDs still produce heat that has to be removed from the electronics. ENERGY STAR notes that LEDs rely on heat sinks, and thermal management matters to performance; a high-output corn lamp inside an older enclosed fixture can make heat management harder and shorten LED life.

Appearance

A fixture built around a large HID lamp wasn’t necessarily designed for a corn bulb. It may work electrically but look less clean or modern than a purpose-built LED fixture.

Light Distribution

The reflector and optics were designed around the original lamp. Changing only the bulb can sometimes produce uneven lighting or send light where it isn’t useful.

For that reason, we generally compare the cost of a corn-bulb retrofit versus a complete LED fixture replacement before recommending either option.

Retrofit Options

Security and curb appeal, at the same time

A well-designed outdoor lighting system can illuminate areas where people walk, discourage unwanted activity, and make a property look significantly better at night.

LED Wall Packs

Fixtures mounted on exterior walls, commonly used around commercial buildings, warehouses, apartment complexes, loading areas, parking areas, and side or rear entrances. Modern LED wall packs replace older metal-halide or high-pressure-sodium fixtures while using substantially less power.

  • Wide-area lighting
  • Downward-directed lighting
  • Adjustable output
  • Motion sensing
  • Dusk-to-dawn operation

Cobra-Head & Parking-Lot Lighting

Pole-mounted fixtures used to illuminate parking lots, roadways, large commercial properties, industrial yards and apartment communities. Many older fixtures use high-pressure sodium or metal-halide lamps.

  • Lower electrical consumption
  • Better visibility
  • More consistent light color
  • Faster full brightness
  • Reduced maintenance

Pathway & Landscape Lighting

Outdoor LED lighting doesn’t have to be extremely bright. Lower-level fixtures highlight walkways, steps, driveways, landscaping, trees, walls, entryways and architectural features improving visibility and curb appeal at night.

Outdoor Security Lighting

Dark areas around a property make doors, gates, side yards, backyards, parking areas, alleys and equipment areas harder to see. Strategically placed LED lighting fixes that, and pairs well with:

  • Motion sensors
  • Photocells
  • Timers
  • Smart controls

Energy Savings

How Much Electricity Can LED Lighting Save?

Savings depend heavily on what is being replaced. Replacing an older high-wattage metal-halide or fluorescent fixture with a properly selected LED fixture can substantially reduce wattage while maintaining or improving usable light.

75–90%

less energy replacing incandescent with LED

90%

less labor & equipment to replace lamps on poles/high walls

The biggest savings generally occur where lights run for many hours every day, including:

Making the Decision

How Much Electricity Can LED Lighting Save?

The answer depends on what you already have. Sometimes replacing a bulb is all that makes sense. Other times a retrofit kit provides the best balance between price and performance. And when the existing fixture is old, damaged or poorly designed for LED lamps, replacing the entire fixture may provide better lighting and better long-term value.
