When Is a Panel Upgrade Required and When Is It Optional?
Sometimes a panel must be replaced because there’s no safe way to add the equipment you need. Other times, it still works, but replacing it makes sense.

No Breaker Space Left
Every panel has a limited number of breaker slots. If yours is full and you need a circuit for an EV charger, hot tub, pool equipment, or a new appliance, additional capacity is required.
Tandem Breakers Won't Solve It
A tandem breaker fits two 120V circuits into one space — but not every panel allows them, and some only in certain slots. A full panel that can't take tandems needs a larger box.
The Bus Bar Is Burned or Damaged
Breakers attach to the bus bar to draw power. Overheating or arcing can burn, pit, or melt it — and a new breaker won't fix bus bar damage.
The Panel Can't Support Your Load
Adding an EV charger to an older 100-amp service can exceed its capacity. A load calculation determines if a 100A → 200A upgrade is necessary.
