Breaker and Circuit Troubleshooting

Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement in Las Vegas & Henderson

A breaker that trips, will not reset or leaves a circuit without power may be reacting to a problem elsewhere. PDQ tests the breaker, circuit, connected load and panel before recommending repair or replacement.

PDQ troubleshoots and repairs tripping breakers, failed breakers, overheating connections and other circuit-breaker problems in Las Vegas and Henderson.

Not Every Trip Means a Bad Breaker

Repeatedly resetting or replacing a breaker does not correct an overload, short circuit, ground fault, loose connection or defective appliance.

Had PDQ out to my house to resolve three switches that were no longer working, and trouble shoot a 4-way switch that was not operating correctly. Steven was on time, polite and professional. Had all three switches replaced and working in under two hours and figured out the 4-way switch issue and fixed it. All of this for around $350! We're very happy with PDQ Electric!

I had a great experience with PDQ Electric and highly recommend them! Chad and Jeremy were absolute pros from start to finish. They tackled a couple of jobs around my home with fantastic results. First, they installed a brand-new ceiling fan in a room where there was no existing fixture or power source, seamlessly running a cable from a nearby light fixture. Second, they safely fixed and replaced a burnt light switch that had been giving me trouble. Beyond their technical skill, their team was top-notch to work with: - Great Communication: They kept me informed every step of the way, so there were no surprises. - Clean & Professional: They left the work areas spotless when they finished. - Friendly Service: Everyone I interacted with was kind, polite, and truly professional. If you need fast, reliable, and high-quality electrical work, PDQ Electric is the way to go. I will definitely be calling them again for future projects!

Common Breaker Problems

What Is the Breaker Doing?

Describe the symptom, what was operating and whether the problem affects one device, one circuit or multiple areas.

01

Breaker Keeps Tripping

The circuit may be overloaded or have a short circuit, ground fault, damaged conductor or defective connected equipment.

02

Breaker Will Not Reset

The breaker may be responding to an active fault, may not be fully reset or may itself be defective.

03

Reset but Still No Power

The problem may involve another breaker, GFCI, connection, device, conductor or upstream electrical issue.

04

Hot or Buzzing Breaker

Heat, buzzing, discoloration or odor can indicate a poor connection, overload, equipment problem or panel damage.

05

Loose or Damaged Breaker

A breaker that does not seat correctly or shows damage requires evaluation of both the breaker and the panel connection.

06

Main Breaker Problem

Main-breaker symptoms can affect multiple circuits and may require evaluation of the service, panel and incoming power.

Diagnosis Before Replacement

Is the Breaker Actually the Problem?

The breaker is designed to interrupt power when electrical conditions exceed what the circuit should safely carry. Replacing it without finding the cause can leave the actual problem unresolved.

Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that immediately trips, feels hot, buzzes, smells burnt or shows discoloration. Turn off the affected circuit and contact PDQ.

Possible causes PDQ may evaluate

Overloaded circuit
Too much equipment operating on the same circuit.

Short circuit or ground fault
Damaged wiring, equipment or a connection creating an abnormal current path.

Defective appliance or equipment
A connected load may cause the breaker to operate.

Loose or overheated connection
A poor termination can create heat and intermittent operation.

Defective or incompatible breaker
The breaker may be damaged, worn or incorrect for the panel and application.

Panel or bus damage
The connection behind the breaker may be the actual problem.

What Should You Send?

Do not remove the panel cover or dead front.

Photos may help identify the panel and breaker, but they cannot establish why a breaker trips. PDQ will tell you whether on-site troubleshooting is needed.

Questions

Circuit Breaker Repair FAQ

The cause may be another breaker, a tripped GFCI, a failed device, loose connection, damaged conductor or a larger service problem. On-site troubleshooting may be required.

Often, yes, when the panel is serviceable, a compatible listed breaker is available and the bus connection is undamaged. PDQ must also address the reason the breaker failed or tripped.

Photos may identify the equipment and visible damage. They generally cannot diagnose an overload, short circuit, ground fault, loose connection or defective appliance, so troubleshooting may require a service visit.

Cost depends on breaker type, availability, panel condition, access and whether troubleshooting or circuit repair is required. The cause must be understood before a responsible scope can be provided.

Not necessarily. The breaker may be responding correctly to an overload, fault or defective appliance. PDQ tests the circuit and connected load before recommending replacement.

The breaker may need to be moved fully to the off position before resetting, or it may be responding to an active fault. A defective breaker is also possible. Do not keep resetting it when it immediately trips again.
